I Built RetroRig Because My Retro Gaming Setup Outgrew My Memory
At some point, a retro gaming collection stops being a row of consoles and starts becoming infrastructure.
You have a system on one shelf, its power supply in a drawer, a controller that may or may not belong to that revision, three different ways to connect it to a television, and an A/V switch with labels that made perfect sense six months ago. Then something develops a fault and you find yourself trying to remember when it was last serviced, what you did to it, and whether that strange capacitor issue was relevant to your particular model.
That was the problem I kept running into.
There are already some excellent apps for cataloguing games, but I wanted something built around the *hardware*: the consoles, handhelds, televisions, scalers, switchers, cables, power supplies, storage locations, and maintenance work that make a retro setup function.
So I built RetroRig.
More Than a List of Consoles
RetroRig starts with a hardware collection, but the idea is not simply to keep a checklist of what you own.
Each piece of gear can have its own record containing photos, manufacturer and model information, serial number, condition, replacement value, notes, and physical location. Templates are included for a large range of consoles and handhelds, so adding a familiar system does not mean starting with a completely blank form every time.
That becomes particularly useful once equipment is spread across different rooms, cabinets, shelves, or storage boxes. Instead of remembering that a particular cable is “probably somewhere near the television,” you can give it an actual home and find it again later.

Following the Signal
The feature that most clearly explains why RetroRig exists is signal-path management.
A connected retro setup can become surprisingly complicated. A console might run from one output into an A/V switch, then into a scaler, and finally into a display. The next console may share part of that route but use a different input. Even when everything works, it can be difficult to remember which ports to select - or to explain the setup to somebody else.
RetroRig lets you create a visual route from one device to the next, including the relevant inputs, outputs, connection types, and play instructions. A path might look something like:
Console → composite output → A/V switch input 3 → CRT television
Opening the path gives you the information needed to connect and use it, while tapping a piece of equipment takes you directly to its record. It is a wiring diagram and a practical “how do I play this thing?” guide in one place.
For collectors with multiple switchers, scalers, displays, or consoles that are regularly moved around, this can save a remarkable amount of cable tracing.

Giving Old Hardware a Little Foresight
Retro hardware is wonderful, but it comes with history - and sometimes that history includes leaking batteries, aging capacitors, worn optical drives, fragile connectors, or power components that deserve attention.
RetroRig includes hardware notices that can be matched to relevant equipment in your collection. These are not intended to replace diagnosis or professional repair advice. They are practical prompts: issues worth knowing about, things to inspect, and preventative steps that may help a collector catch a problem earlier.
Notices can be reviewed, monitored, planned for service, marked resolved, or marked as not affecting a particular item. Where available, the source behind a notice can also be opened for further reading.
If a notice needs action, it can be turned into a service ticket with relevant details already filled in. That keeps the warning, the affected hardware, and the resulting work connected instead of leaving them scattered between bookmarks and notes.

Keeping a Real Service History
When work is performed, RetroRig can record the symptoms, diagnosis, work completed, dates, cost, and service photos. Over time, each item develops a useful maintenance history.
That matters whether you repair your own equipment or send it to somebody else. Months or years later, you can see what was done instead of relying on memory or searching through old messages and receipts.
The service area separates active work from completed tickets, while each equipment page keeps its own relevant history and notices close at hand.
Records That Stay With You
I wanted RetroRig to be useful in a room full of old hardware even if there is no account, no cloud connection, and no signal.
The collection is stored locally on the device. Full offline backups can package records and managed photos into a portable ZIP file, which can later be validated and restored. The app can also create collection and maintenance reports, including material useful for insurance documentation, location inventories, service history, and saved signal paths.
The goal is simple: the records about your collection should remain under your control, and they should be useful outside the app when you need them.

It Should Feel at Home Beside the Hardware
RetroRig is a modern Android app, but I did not want it to look like a generic business database.
Its themes draw inspiration from several eras of gaming and computing: early 8-bit hardware, the 16-bit period, early 3D consoles, monochrome handhelds, and the classic desktop interfaces of the 1990s. Each theme changes more than its colours; the frames, controls, icons, default equipment art, and overall presentation are designed to give it a distinct character.
The current default theme takes its cues from the early 3D era, while a dark theme is also available for free. Additional themes are part of RetroRig Pro.

Free to Start, With a One-Time Upgrade
RetroRig is free to download and its core tools can be used without a subscription. The free version supports a collection of up to 25 items, one signal path, offline backup and restore, and core collection tools.
For larger or more involved setups, RetroRig Pro is a one-time purchase. It unlocks unlimited equipment and signal paths, advanced reports and filters, additional themes, expanded service-photo support, and extra maintenance workflow features.
I strongly preferred a straightforward permanent upgrade over turning somebody's hardware records into another monthly bill.
Built for the Collection Behind the Games
RetroRig is still growing. There are many directions I would like to take it, including broader support for the retro-computing side of a collection. But its purpose will remain the same: helping people understand what they own, where it is, how it connects, and what it may need next.
